Shiyu Fang is a pianist and composer from China specializing in jazz. While attending Berklee College of Music, jazz became the focal point of Shiyu’s artistic journey, receiving awards and scholarships such as the Berklee Toshiko Akiyoshi Award and Herb Pomeroy Scholarship. Mentored by renowned figures like Kris Davis, Kevin Harris, Ayn Inserto, Kenny Werner and Billy Childs, their exploration spans musical expression, composition, and gender dynamics in jazz.

Active in the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, Shiyu prioritizes challenging norms and promoting inclusivity in the jazz community. Collaborations with renowned artists such as Miguel Zenón, Jim McNeely, Bijon Watson and performances at prestigious events like The Vermont Solo Piano Jazz Festival in 2023.

Beyond performances, Shiyu engaged in collaborative projects with artist Rashid Johnson, contributing to Antoine’s Organ. A week-long solo piano exhibition at the Isabella Gardner Museum showcased Shiyu’s diverse musicality and strengthened artistic connections, reflecting a commitment to broadening creative boundaries.

For the past two years, Shiyu worked as a core music tutor at Berklee College of Music, specializing in jazz music theory, ear training, and arranging. She additionally functioned as a peer academic coach, aiming to enhance the study skills and effective practice techniques of music students. She has also served as an Ensemble Mentor under Jazz and Gender Justice outreach program with Boston Arts Academy.

My goal was to simplify music concepts, making them more accessible and understandable, thereby transforming practice into an enjoyable journey for learning. I strive to pass on inspiration and love every day. There are endless possibilities, and I love to help artists shape their unique voices through sonic exploration and discovery.”
